Program details
The Park of Tsaritsyno was founded in the 18th century by the order of Empress Catherine II. It was assumed that this would be a summer imperial residence, which would replace the Kolomenskoye estate, which was bored by the empress. The palace complex has been under construction for many years. The first palace, built by the architect Vasily Bazhenov, was not appreciated by Catherine, so it was demolished. In its place, the architect Matvey Kazakov had erected a new building, which has survived to nowadays. The palace complex of the park is an example of Russian Gothic architecture, it has no equal in Russia. The Tsaritsyno park itself is located on a hilly area and has a cascade of ponds. One of the best gardeners of the time, Francis Reed, was ordered from England to create the English gardens in the imperial residence. After the death of Catherine II, the palace and the park fell into decay. Throughout the 19th and almost the entire 20th century, the unique buildings were slowly destroyed by time, but in 1993 Tsaritsyno finally received the status of a museum-reserve. In 2005-2007, the buildings of the estate were reconstructed and adapted for museum use. Large-scale works completely changed the perception of the ensemble. In particular, the interior decorations of the palace were redone in the style of the 18th century, the new roofs were set, using one of the projects of M.F. Kazakov, the new entrance pavilion to the museum was done. The ponds were equipped with modern dynamic light fountains. Today the Tsaritsyno estate is a cultural center of urban significance, preserving the elements of a royal country estate of the 18th century.
