Program details

The Cathedral of the Intercession, renamed by the Russian people into the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed, is an integral part of Russian history and an outstanding piece of architecture of the 16th century. In its decoration, there is a synthesis of the most valuable and striking examples of the architectural heritage of past eras, combining an amazing variety of details into a single whole. The cathedral has purely Russian national architectural features. Inside the cathedral there are unique Orthodox relics: Icons of the Holy Trinity (2nd half of the 16th century), St. Basil the Blessed (end of the 16th century); St. Alexander Nevsky with 32 hallmarks (early 17th century). In total, in the interior decoration you can see 1100 works of Old Russian painting, about 500 items made of precious metals, about 2 thousand objects of applied art. This famous church was on Red Square long before the first Romanov dynasty came to power and survived the war with Napoleon and the Second World War. Fortunately, time has not spoiled this large cathedral and you can see it with your own eyes. Go inside and marvel at nine small churches under one roof.
