The Peterhof rightfully occupies a special place among the wonderful suburbs of St. Petersburg due to its artistic and historical significance. It was created in the first quarter of the 18th century and is an outstanding monument of not only Russian, but also the world culture. This is exactly the place where millions of tourists from different parts of the world strive to get acquainted with the grandiose fountain complex that eclipsed the famous Versailles. The State Museum-Reserve "Peterhof" is the most visited museum in Russia. Every tourist who comes to St. Petersburg is simply obliged to see the capital of the fountains!
The first architect of Peterhof was Peter the Great, who made drawings and sketches. The idea of creating the palace and park originated from the emperor after a diplomatic visit to Versailles in France. The architectural designs and the arrangement of the fountains were studied, and later served as the basis for the design of Peterhof. Together with Russian masters, the work was carried out by architects and sculptors from France, Italy, Austria, Prussia and Holland.
The center of the entire Peterhof ensemble is the Grand Palace. This three-storey building offers you a linear Baroque composition with a length of three hundred meters. The residence of the Russian emperors is one of the largest monuments in Europe and is under the protection of UNESCO. The collection of the museum includes more than three and a half thousand ancient exhibits located on the territory of 30 halls and rooms of the palace. The main staircase, the Blue Reception room, the Dance and Throne halls evoke admiration for their decoration and squares. The largest hall has an area of 330 sq. m.
The famous fountains of Peterhof deliver no less delight. There are more than 150 fountains and 4 cascades located on the territory of the Lower Park. The most important structure is called the Grand Cascade and is unique due to its size, water volume and variety of sculptures. The Upper Garden has one cascade and five fountains, each of which also has its own name and history. Peterhof is a must-see capital of fountains!
