The Peter and Paul Fortress is the oldest architectural monument in St. Petersburg. The fortress was founded on May 27, 1703, and the date of its foundation is considered to be the date of foundation of the Northern capital. The history of the whole city had started here. A visit to the Peter and Paul Fortress is the most logical beginning of any excursion program in St. Petersburg. Here, you will know about the people who brought St. Petersburg to the world and about the events that influenced the history of the whole country. We will acquaint you not only with the architectural objects of the fortress, but also with a series of historical characters - which will undoubtedly arouse your keen interest! We will enter the fortress through the front gate and head towards the Peter and Paul Cathedral. Once inside the cathedral, you will learn about the burials of the tsars, the remains of the family of Nicholas II and understand why the fortress is called the heart of the Russian Empire. After that, we will admire the ensemble of Cathedral Square and see the building where Peter's small boat was kept. We’ll explore one of the most controversial and expressive monuments to Peter the Great. After passing through the Nevsky Gate to the water, you will study a table showing the extent of the floods that the city had experienced through its history. At the end of the excursion we will visit the prison of the Trubetskoy Bastion. Here our story will touch on the fate of the famous prisoners of the Hare Island: Tsarevich Alexei, Princess Tarakanova, Fyodor Dostoevsky and the Decembrists. We will study the life of the prisoners, see historical casemates and a prison bath. If the tour takes place in the morning, you will hear the traditional midday cannon shot, impressive for both children and adults.
