Program details

St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg is an outstanding example of Russian cult art. It is one of the most beautiful and significant domed structures not only in Russia, but also in the world. In size, the temple is second only to the Cathedrals of St. Peter in Rome, St. Paul in London and St. Mary in Florence. The construction of the cathedral lasted almost 40 years and its result was one of the tallest domed structures in the world - its height is more than 100 meters, and the total weight reaches three hundred thousand tons. The huge columns that frame the Isaac Museum from all sides, a huge gilded dome, graceful statues and bas-reliefs are already enough cause for admiration. However, the interior decoration of this building is also worthy of the highest praise. The interiors of St. Isaac's Cathedral are striking in their beauty and richness of decoration. More than 20 types of decorative stones were used for the mosaic - porphyry, malachite, lapis lazuli, various types of marble. The columns of the iconostasis of the temple are faced with malachite and Badakhshan lapis lazuli. Here are collected about 26 thousands of objects of painting, graphics, sculptures, mosaics and other historical values. Being in the center of the capital city, the cathedral was both a witness and a place of the most important historical events. It is undoubtedly one of the most important symbols of St. Petersburg and a must-see place.
